Spring 2024: Prospective Students
All students who are interested in joining the orchestra program should be sure to put orchestra in their top 5 choices during course selection, and also fill out this form so that we can help place you into the correct class.
If you have at least one year's experience playing violin, viola, cello, or bass and would like to audition for an advanced orchestra at Kealing, you will need to prepare an audition piece and a scale of your choice for a in-person audition. We will provide a list of things to prepare depending on your group of interest. You will also need to do a short sight-reading test so that we can test your music literacy. If you have any questions regarding the audition process, please email Ms. Riley at [email protected].
We will be having auditions on the week of April 15-18, 2024 between 3-5pm! If these dates do not work, please still fill out our form so that we can work on alternatives. Thank you!

Thank you so much for your interest in joining the Kealing Orchestra. We are so excited to meet all students and families interested in joining the Orchestra and want to help find time to meet you and your child, and answer any of your questions.
Our orchestra program is a large and successful organization that is a great place for Kealing students to continue playing their instrument, play in an ensemble setting, meet new friends, and have exciting performance opportunities! The Kealing orchestra is one of the best middle school orchestras in central Texas, and is welcoming to all students who either already play the violin, viola, cello, or bass, or to students who want to start learning to play an instrument. For students who already play, they will be placed in one of our 3 advanced ensembles (not beginner level): the Concert, Philharmonic, or Symphony (must be at least a 7th grader with orchestral experience) Orchestra.
We like to schedule times for students who already play an instrument so that we can meet them, ask about their musical background, and hear them play to determine which of the advanced orchestras will be the best fit for them. We call it an “audition”, but it is not to determine whether a student is “in or out” of the orchestra. It is simply a time we can figure out which orchestra is the appropriate level for them. We ask that they come prepared to play a piece of music they feel comfortable and confident with and, if they have played scales, a scale of their choice. We will also do a sight-reading test just to see where the student's music literacy is at. It is perfectly okay if a student's reading isn't as proficient but it will determing the group they will be placed in. A piece of their choosing should be something they have either played with their private teacher, or orchestra group, that they feel shows off what they can do. A Suzuki piece or solo is great if that is what they work on.
This year's auditions will take place in person and we will have more information on dates soon!
After the audition, the director will discuss what they believe is the best option and answer any questions about scheduling or instrument needs for next year.
We look forward to meeting you and your child and are excited about their future in the Kealing Orchestra!
